Twin retort charcoal facility
Arusha - Tanzania
A twin-retort charcoal facility in Arusha, Tanzania, provides energy efficient and CO2 neutral charcoal, to compete with illegal charcoal production in Tanzania.
FSC certified charcoal
FFT set-up a Twin-Retort Charcoal unit in the rural area of the Masaai planes, near Arusha. This facility of Nguk FFT Ltd., a joint venture between RSI (Rotiana Social Investment Ltd) and FFT, caters the increasing demand for charcoal in Tanzania and competes with the illegal charcoal. The wood for the charcoal comes from waste wood from nearby ranches and own plantations, with FSC certification.
Feasibility study
FFT and RSI conducted a feasibility study that revealed that the increasing demand for charcoal in Tanzania would support a charcoal production unit that could compete with illegal forms of production. “Waste” wood from the Ormoti ranch is ideal raw material for this purpose.
High efficiency charcoal production
Traditional charcoal production methods are extremely inefficient and are rapidly depleting the natural resources of the region. Twin Retort technology is CO2 neutral and far more efficient than traditional methods. Only 3.3 kg of wood are required to produce 1 kg of charcoal.
Turnkey design, engineering and construction
The facility has been designed, engineered and constructed by FFT according to the (high) European standards.
Training, start-up and operational support
Prior to the start-up of operations, the partners of Nguk FFT Ltd. (RSI and FFT) commenced recruitment of employees for key positions. Training of other employees started after the kilns had been installed. FFT provides ongoing support during implementation.
